According to recent research, around 88% of U.S. adults shop online. That’s more than 255 million people! By 2024, that number is projected to reach nearly 279 million.

Whether you’ve shopped virtually for years or you’re just now getting into it, there’s no denying that you can score some major steals this way. Plus, you can do it all from the comfort of your living room!

Are you looking to buy some new kicks for the summer? If so, you can find tons of great sneaker styles online.

Before you start shopping, however, you’ll need to know your shoe size. Not sure how to measure it from home? We’ve got you covered.

Read on to discover our best tips on how to get the perfect fit, every time.

1. Understand the Basics

Before we dive into our guide to measuring shoe size at home, let’s cover a few basic tips to keep in mind.

First, let’s talk timing. Did you know that there is a right and wrong time to measure your shoe size?

It’s true! We recommend measuring your foot at the end of the day, after a day of walking. Exertion causes your feet to swell just slightly, and this will give you a more accurate measurement.

Another tip to consider is that shoe size measurements should be incredibly precise. Resist the urge to round up or down, and record the exact number you see. Shoe sizes can vary by 1/8 of an inch, so it helps to be detail-oriented.

As you measure, you may notice that one foot is bigger than the other. No, your eyes aren’t playing tricks on you. Roughly 60% of people have one foot that’s at least a quarter size different than the other! Just choose the larger size when you’re shopping, and you shouldn’t notice the difference.

2. Gather Your Essentials

When you’re ready, go ahead and gather the items you’ll need to measure your foot. If you were shopping in-store, you’d likely find an associate and slip your foot inside a metal Brannock Device to get your perfect number. However, you can still find the perfect fit at home, as long as you know what to do.

Remember: You don’t want to measure your foot bare unless you’re shopping for sandals or flip-flops. It’s best to go ahead and slip on the socks that you’ll most likely wear with your new shoes.

Besides those, here’s a quick list of the other gear you’ll need:

  • A pencil
  • A ruler or measuring tape
  • Two pieces of paper
  • A friend (if possible)

You can absolutely measure your shoe size alone, but it’s easier if there’s someone helping you! You’ll need to bend down to trace your foot, and if your balance is off, you could slip or measure inaccurately. If touching your toes is a challenge, go ahead and enlist the help of a friend or loved one.

3. Trace Your Feet

First, place each foot in the middle of each piece of paper, putting your full weight on both feet.

Using the pencil, trace the outline of each foot, or have someone else do this task for you. Stay steady as you trace to make sure the measurement is as close as possible.

What should you do if your foot is bigger than a single sheet of paper? In that case, simply tape two sheets of paper together, with one slightly overlapping the other.

4. Measure Length and Width

When you’re done tracing both feet, step off the paper and grab your ruler or measuring tape. Place it on the paper between your longest toe and the edge of your heel. For most people, the longest toe is their biggest toe, but this isn’t always the case.

Record the length you see, making a separate measurement for each foot. That is the overall length of your foot. Mark down the measurement in both inches and centimeters.

Then, you need to measure the width of each foot.

To do so, place your ruler across the widest part of your foot. This should be the ball of your foot. It’s the padded portion of your sole, located between your toes and the arch of your foot. Write down these measurements, using both inches and centimeters to cover your bases.

5. Reference the Online Sizing Guide

It would be ideal if all shoe manufacturers stuck to the same, general sizing chart. However, this isn’t the case, as there isn’t a universal shoe size standard. Still, you don’t have to estimate, cross your fingers, and hope for the best.

Most virtual shops make it easy to find the perfect fit. Once you’ve found a sneaker you love, you’ll need to compare the measurements of your foot against the brand’s sizing guide.

If you’re shopping online, this guide should be easily accessible via the company’s website.

For instance, you can find all of our sizing info on this page! We reference heel-to-toe measurements only, and we’ve included separate charts for each brand in our lineup. You’ll also notice that we’ve included different size conversions for our European, UK, and U.S. customers.

Remember that different shoes will have their own fit. Be sure to reference the correct brand as you shop! If you’re between two different sizes, we recommend sizing up to avoid any discomfort.
